An American Airlines Boeing 737-800, registration N825NN performing flight
AA-1760 from Myrtle Beach,SC to Charlotte,NC (USA) with 181 people on board, was climbing out of Myrtle Beach's runway 18 when the crew declared Mayday reporting a captain's side (left hand) engine malfunction subsequently adding they may have hit birds about mid runway. The aircraft stopped the climb at 2000 feet. A subsequent runway inspection found bird debris on the runway. The aircraft returned for a safe landing on runway 18 about 20 minutes after departure.
Passengers reported the left hand engine emitted streaks of flames and bangs.
The FAA reported a bird strike.
A replacement A319-100 registration N832AW reached Charlotte with a delay of 7.5 hours.
The occurrence aircraft is still on the ground in Myrtle Beach about 28 hours after landing.
