An American Airlines Boeing 777-300, registration N717AN performing flight
AA-954 from Buenos Aires Ezeiza,BA (Argentina) to New York JFK,NY (USA), was enroute at FL320 about 400nm northwest of Buenos Aires when the crew decided to return to Buenos Aires due to an unusual noise coming from the cargo hold. The aircraft landed safely on runway 11 about 2:15 hours after departure. The aircraft vacated the runway and stopped on the parallel taxiway, where armed police forces entered the cargo hold.
The airline reported: "Reports of a person in cargo are not accurate. Flight 954 returned to Buenos Aires due to a reported noise in the cargo hold but, after a thorough search, it was determined there was no issue. Our customers will be re-departing later today and we apologize for the inconvenience."
The flight was postponed to the next day and was subsequently cancelled.
The occurrence aircraft is still on the ground in Buenos Aires and is currently estimated to depart Ezeiza Airport for New York as flight AA-900 about 24 hours after planned departure for
AA-954.
