An ANZ Air New Zealand Airbus A321-200N, registration ZK-NNC performing flight NZ-942 from Auckland (New Zealand) to Rarotonga (Cook Islands), was climbing out of Auckland's runway 05R when the aircraft received a lightning strike prompting the crew to stop the climb at about 10,000 feet and return to Auckland. The aircraft entered a hold at 7000 feet for about an hour to burn off fuel and proceeded for a safe landing on runway 05R about 90 minutes after departure.

A replacement Airbus A321-200N registration ZK-NND reached Rarotonga with a delay of 24 hours.

The occurrence aircraft returned to service about 25.5 hours after landing back.
