An Icelandair Boeing 757-200, registration TF-FIK performing flight
FI-454 from Keflavik (Iceland) to London Heathrow,EN (UK), was enroute at FL370 about 330nm southeast of Keflavik when the crew decided to return to Keflavik due to an indication suggesting a problem arising with an engine's (RB211) gearbox. The aircraft maintained FL370 for the return and was later descending towards Keflavik when the crew needed to shut the engine down. The aircraft landed safely on Keflavik's runway 19 about 1:55 hours after departure.
A replacement Boeing 757-200 registration TF-ISR reached London with a delay of about 2:45 hours.
The airline reported the crew received an indication of a technical issue that needed to be looked at.
According to preliminary information The Aviation Herald received there was an indication suggesting a developing problem on the engine's gearbox, the engine subsequently needed to be shut down.
