A Jeju Airlines Boeing 737-800, registration HL8337 performing flight 7C-1961 from Sapporo (Japan) to Seoul (South Korea) with 187 passengers and 6 crew, was climbing out of Sapporo when the crew stopped the climb at FL200 due to the right hand engine emitting bangs and streaks of flames. The crew shut the engine down, entered a hold to burn off fuel and returned to Sapporo's New Chitose Airport for a safe landing on runway 01R about 80 minutes after departure.

The aircraft is still on the ground in Sapporo about 15 hours after landing back.
