AA-5511 from Washington National,DC to Syracuse,NY (USA), was on final approach to Syracuse's runway 28 when the aircraft was cleared to land.
An Endeavor Canadair CRJ-900 on behalf of Delta Airlines, registration N927XJ performing flight DL-5421 from Syracuse,NY to New York La Guardia,NY (USA), was cleared for takeoff from runway 28 a few seconds after
AA-5511 was cleared to land.
AA-5511 queried tower who was cleared for takeoff, which prompted tower to instruct
AA-5511 to go around. While both aircraft climbed out the separation reduced to 800 feet vertical and 0.11nm horizontal over the end of the runway and further to 600 feet vertical and 0.08nm horizontal about 0.6nm past the runway end and, already on diverging trajectories to 300 feet vertical and 0.26nm horizontal.
The FAA is investigating the occurrence.
