A Smartwings Boeing 737-700, registration OK-SWW performing flight
QS-2298 from Chios to Skyros (Greece), was descending through about 1500 feet MSL flying in westerly direction south of the aerodrome, when the aircraft entered clouds and the GPWS issued a "PULL UP!" alert (terrain rising up to 1322 feet MSL). The crew complied with the GPWS warning, climbed to 5000 feet, joined a right hand downwind for runway 17 and landed on runway 17 without further incident about 10 minutes later.
Czechia's CAA reported: "The flight crew violated operational procedures by flying into cloud cover on approach, thereby reducing the safety of the flight. However, by the fact that the crew did not ignore the warning of the GPWS system and immediately initiated the actions related to this situation, all safety barriers functioned preventing a collision with the terrain and preventing to endanger the safety of the people on board."
