A United Boeing 777-300, registration N2250U performing flight UA-869 from San Francisco,CA (USA) to Hong Kong (China), was climbing out of San Francisco's runway 28L when the crew stopped the climb at FL220 reporting they had a strong odour in the back and needed to return to San Francisco. The aircraft dumped fuel and landed safely back on San Francisco's runway 28R about one hour after departure.

A replacement Boeing 777-300 registration N2251U reached Hong Kong with a delay of about 6 hours.
