A UPS United Parcel Service Boeing 747-400, registration N580UP performing flight 5X-109 from Shanghai Pudong (China) to Tokyo Narita (Japan), was on approach to Narita's runway 16L when on short final the aircraft encountered windshear and touched down hard at about 19:52L (10:52Z) despite the crew performing a windshear recovery procedure. Following the hard touch down the aircraft went around, positioned for another approach to runway 16R and landed without further incident about 20 minutes after the go around.
The aircraft is still on the ground in Tokyo about 25 days after the landing.
On May 31st 2023 Japan's TSB reported they have opened an investigation into the occurrence confirming the aircraft sustained damage during a balked landing due to strong winds.
On Apr 26th 2024 the JTSB released a progress report stating that the extent of the damage became only known on May 26th 2023, the same day they opened an accident investigation. The aircraft was attempting to land on Narita's runway 16L when just before touchdown the airspeed reduced signficantly resulting in a hard touch down and go around. The aircraft landed on 16R about 20 minutes later. The post flight inspection revealed the right inboard flap was interfering with the aileron, there were deformations in the fuselage skin and aft pressure bulkhead. At the time of the accident there was a windshear warning in effect for runway 16L. The investigation is ongoing.
