An Air India Airbus A321-200, registration VT-PPW performing flight AI-639 from Mumbai to Chennai (India), was climbing out of Mumbai's runway 27 when the crew stopped the climb at FL240 reporting a burning odour in the cockpit. The aircraft returned to Mumbai for a safe landing on runway 27 about 45 minutes after departure.

A replacement A321-200 registration VT-PPK reached Chennai with a delay of about 5 hours.

The occurrence aircraft returned to service about 16.5 hours after landing back.
