An Air India Boeing 777-200, registration VT-ALG performing flight AI-183 from Delhi (India) to San Francisco,CA (USA) with 225 passengers and 19 crew, was enroute at FL330 about 460nm north of Krasnoyarsk (Russia) when the crew decided to divert to Krasnoyarsk due to a cargo smoke indication. The aircraft landed safely on Krasnoyarsk's runway 29 about 90 minutes after the decision to divert.

A replacement boeing 777-300 registration VT-AEQ positioned from Mumbai (India) to Krasnoyarsk and reached San Francisco as flight AI-1179 with a delay of about 26 hours.

The occurrence aircraft positioned to Mumbai after about 40 hours after landing in Krasnoyarsk and is estimated to resume service on Jul 22nd 2024.

The airline announced: "Air India flight AI183 of 18 July 2024 operating Delhi to San Francisco made a precautionary landing at Krasnoyarsk International Airport (KJA) in Russia after the cockpit crew detected a potential issue in the cargo hold area. The aircraft landed safely at KJA with all 225 passengers and 19 members of the flight crew, who have now disembarked and have been taken to the terminal building for further processes."
