A Jazz Canadair CRJ-900, registration C-FJZN performing flight QK-734/AC-8734 from Cleveland,OH (USA) to Toronto,ON (Canada), was descending through FL190 towards Toronto, when the #1 yaw damper suddenly disconnected. When the crew attempted to reconnect the yaw damper, the aircraft suddenly veered to the left. The same occurred again about 10 seconds later. The crew disconnected the autopilot, used the #2 autopilot, declared PAN PAN and continued for a safe landing on Toronto's runway 33.
The TSB wrote the aircraft "was inbound to Toronto/Lester B. Pearson International Airport (CYYZ), ON, at FL 190 when the aircraft's #1 yaw damper suddenly disengaged. When the flight crew attempted to reengage it, the aircraft veered abruptly to the left. The same incident occurred about 10 seconds later. The autopilot was then disengaged, and the #2 system was utilized. The flight crew declared a PAN PAN and landed on runway 33 at CYYZ without further incident. Aircraft rescue and firefighting met the aircraft upon landing and escorted it to the gate."
The aircraft returned to service about 3.5 hours after landing.
