A Jazz de Havilland Dash 8-400, registration C-GGCI performing flight QK-8317 from Vancouver,BC to Comox,BC (Canada) with 37 passengers and 4 crew, was enroute at 10,000 feet about to reach the top of descent into Comox when the crew reduced the power for the descent, however, the left hand propeller (Dowty ) RPM increased to 1090 rpm resulting in a propeller overspeed indication. The crew carried out the overspeed drill, feathered the propeller, shut the engine (PW150A) down, declared PAN PAN and decided to return to Vancouver. The aircraft landed safely back about 25 minutes after departure and taxied to the apron.
The Canadian TSB reported maintenance confirmed a propeller overspeed had occurred and replaced the pitch control unit and the #1 propeller electronic control unit. A service difficulty report was filed.
