A LATAM Chile Boeing 787-9, registration CC-BGR performing flight
LA-801 from Santiago (Chile) to Auckland (New Zealand), was enroute at FL330 over the Pacific Ocean about 350nm southwest of Santiago when the crew decided to return to Santiago. The aircraft descended to FL320 for the return and landed safely on Santiago's runway 17R about 2:25 hours after departure.
A passenger reported the crew announced the aircraft was consuming too much fuel, therefore they did not have enough fuel to make it to Auckland.
The flight and subsequent sectors to Sydney,NS (Australia) and back were cancelled.
The occurrence aircraft returned to service about 22 hours after landing back.
