A Lufthansa Airbus A321-100, registration D-AIRL performing flight
LH-1311 from Malta (Malta) to Frankfurt/Main (Germany), was enroute at FL340 about 30nm westnorthwest of Palermo (Italy) when the crew observed abnormal indications for one of the engines (V2530) failed prompting the crew to declare emergency and divert to Palermo. A number of other approaches into Palermo were sent into holds while the Lufthansa A321 was diverting and landed safely on runway 07 about 23 minutes after leaving FL340.
A replacement Airbus A321-200 registration D-AIDW positioned to Palermo, resumed the flight as LH-245 the next morning about 15 hours after D-AIRL landed in Palermo and is estimated to reach Frankfurt with a delay of 18 hours.
The airline reported technical problems as cause of the diversion.
The occurrence aircraft is still on the ground in Palermo about 15 hours after landing.
