A Lufthansa Boeing 747-400, registration D-ABVW performing flight LH-493 from Vancouver,BC (Canada) to Frankfurt/Main (Germany), was climbing out of Vancouver's runway 26L, when the crew was unable to retract the landing gear and stopped the climb at 12,000 feet. The aircraft dumped fuel and returned to Vancouver for a safe landing on runway 26R about 70 minutes after departure.

Canada's TSB reported a malfunction occurred with the landing gear system preventing the crew from retracting the landing gear.

The aircraft returned to service about 43 hours after landing back.
