A Mahan Air Airbus A340-600, registration EP-MMR performing flight W5-79 from Tehran Imam Khomeini (Iran) to Beijing (China), was enroute at FL370 about 70nm northwest of Almaty (Kazakhstan) when the crew received a fire indication for the #3 engine (Trent 556), worked the related checklists and diverted the aircraft to Almaty for a safe landing on runway 23L about 30 minutes after leaving FL370.

Kazakhstan's AIID rated the occurrence a serious incident and opened an investigation.

The occurrence aircraft remained on the ground for about 4.5 days before returning to service.
