A Malaysia Airlines Airbus A330-200, registration 9M-MTW performing flight MH-780 from Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia) to Bangkok (Thailand), was enroute at FL400 about 190nm north of Kuala Lumpur when the crew initiated an emergency descent to FL100 due to the loss of cabin pressure, the passenger oxygen masks were not released. The aircraft subsequently turned around and returned to Kuala Lumpur for a safe landing about 2 hours after departure.

The airline reported the aircraft suffered a problem with cabin pressurization, the cabin altitude was not exceeded however and oxygen masks were not released.

A replacement A330-300 registration 9M-MTF departed about 3 hours after 9M-MTW landed back and is estimated to reach Bangkok with a delay of about 4 hours.
