A United Boeing 767-400, registration N76054 performing flight UA-126 from Washington Dulles,DC (USA) to Rome Fiumicino (Italy) with 216 people on board, was enroute at FL310 about 80nm southeast of Boston,MA (USA) when the crew decided to return to Washington as a precaution, after a passenger's laptop had fallen behind a cabin wall and down a small gap leading to the (pressurized) cargo hold causing concerns that the Lithium Ion battery could suffer a thermal runaway. The aircraft landed safely on Washington's runway 01R about 80 minutes after the decision to turn around.

The airline reported maintenance personnel located and retrieved the laptop, the aircraft was able to depart again.

The aircraft reached Rome with a delay of about 4.5 hours.
