An Air Canada Boeing 787-9, registration C-FRTU performing flight AC-56 from Toronto,ON (Canada) to Dubai (United Arab Emirates) with 227 people on board, was climbing out of Toronto when the crew received indication that slat #5 had not retracted. The crew worked the related checklists, consulted with dispatch and maintenance, declared PAN PAN and decided to return to Toronto. The aircraft dumped fuel and landed safely back on Toronto's runway 33R about 75 minutes after departure.

The Canadian TSB reported maintenance discovered the "slat skew detection outboard skew cable guide bolts on slat 5 were found to have been painted over and were not lock wired". A maintenance investigation is ongoing.
