A Lufthansa Airbus A320-200, registration D-AIUO performing flight
LH-289 from Bologna (Italy) to Frankfurt/Main (Germany) with 165 passengers and 6 crew, was enroute at FL360 about 60nm south of Stuttgart (Germany) when the crew decided to divert to Stuttgart reporting an unusual odour on board. The aircraft landed safely on Stuttgart's runway 25 about 18 minutes later.
Local Police reported there had been an unusual odour on board, however, no fire or smoke. A technical defect in the galley is suspected as cause of the odour.
The airport reported all passengers disembarked normally and were taken to Frankfurt by bus.
The airline reported the odour was caused by a malfunctioning recirculation fan, the aircraft was able to return to service.
The aircraft is still on the ground in Frankfurt about 21 hours after landing.
