A Lufthansa Boeing 747-8, registration D-ABYP performing flight
LH-430 from Frankfurt/Main (Germany) to Chicago O'Hare,IL (USA) with 320 passengers and 19 crew, was enroute at FL350 over the Atlantic Ocean about 220nm northwest of Shannon (Ireland) when the crew decided to return to Frankfurt due to a strong unpleasant odour causing a good number of passengers to complain. The aircraft maintained FL350 for the return and landed on Frankfurt's runway 07R about 4.5 hours after departure and about 2.5 hours after the decision to return.
The airline reported an unidentified electrical smell without any visible smoke occurred on board prompting a precautionary return to Frankfurt. A replacement aircraft took the passengers to Chicago.
A replacement Boeing 747-400 registration D-ABVY reached Chicago with a delay of about 8.5 hours.
