A TAP Air Portugal Airbus A320-200N, registration CS-TVO performing flight
TP-430 from Lisbon (Portugal) to Paris Orly (France), was climbing through about 8000 feet out of Lisbon's runway 02 when the crew noticed an unusual odour like rotten fish in the cabin, which was traced to the aft galley where it smelled like burned cheese. Several crew members reported throat irritation. The flight crew donned their oxygen masks but subseequently also reported symptoms consistent with exposure to contaminants within the aircraft's ventilation system including dizziness, nausea, cognitive impairments and tremors. Cabin crew donned their protective breathing equipment. The captain declared PAN PAN and returned the aircraft to Lisbon though with difficulties processing information. The aircraft landed safely on Lisbon's runway 02 about 40 minutes after departure.
Portugal's GPIAA reported that the entire crew was sent for medical assessment, one of the cabin crew became unconscious and was transported to a hospital. A deep clean of the cargo area had been carried out the evening prior to the flight. The GPIAA added: "In August, a spillage of fish cargo had occurred in the cargo hold and was subsequently cleaned by maintenance personnel. Separately, at the end of May, a fume-related event had been reported and was resolved following cleaning of the APU compartment."
The aircraft returned to service on Sep 27th 2026.
